War Story

Mistreated by her tyrant of a father in a remote Scottish glen, Maggie finds refuge in her position as a servant at rambling Dulcimer Hall in Sussex. But the arrival of war turns her life upside down as she and the children she looks after are evacuated to America. There Maggie blossoms, stirring jealousy within the household, and though it is Maggie who averts a potential tragedy, she must in the end come home alone. Working as a WAAF driver, one day she picks up a pilot whom she recognises: it's David Vorst, a cousin of the Dulcimer family, with whom she has already fallen in love, and whose wife was the cause of Maggie's departure from America. David has grown disillusioned with the selfish woman he married, and his heart is Maggie's: but how can he abandon his wife and her children? Sure that he won't, Maggie returns to the Highlands to lay old ghosts and find new dreams - little knowing that her old dreams could yet come true.
