Summary
When E.W. ("Jim") Swanton died in January 2000 at the age of 92, the tributes poured in from cricket lovers everywhere; among them John Major, who described him as "one of the great cricket writers of the century". For over seventy years, from the age of Bradman, Jim Swanton described all the great cricket occasions; his immense knowledge and sharp judgement made him a legend. This celebration of his life in cricket includes the best of his writing (including his memories of life on the Burma-Siam railway in the last war), right up to the time of his death. Here too are a selection of the many tributes paid to Swanton after his death, including Sir Tim Rice, John Woodcock, Charles Fry, Lord Runcie, Richard Hutton, Colin Cowdrey, Richie Bernard, Christopher Martin-Jenkins and Robin Mentor. David Rayvern Allen was the last person to interview Swanton, and this interview is included in full, with an introduction by John Major.
